To add to our woes we had our friends cousin who was still learning how to drive, planning to drive for few hours. After driving for a couple of hours, my friend decided to give the car to his cousin, since we felt the road was a little empty.

Here comes the scary part - this guy sits on the wheel and says ABC - A for accelerator, B for brakes, C for clutch. As has happened in the past few years, although we have managed to give rise to an industry called health tourism and made a few bucks too. However, the system and people really need an upheaval if we are to progress and see ourselves as a developed nation.

My grandfather is about 85-86 years old. Both him and my grandmother had a paralysis attack about 6-7 years ago. Since then, my grandmother cannot walk and has to be helped with her day-to-day activities. Mentally and physically strong as my grandfather is, he managed to walk with the help of support (walker as they call it) and has needed little help from the family. However, his health has deteriorated compared to what is was 2-3 years ago. 2 days ago he fell down while trying to help my grandmother sit up. However, he could not hold his balance and fell down and his already paralyzed left leg got a hit. The doctor asked to take an x-ray despite the lack of any swelling but due to the sustained pain in the hip area.

Here's where me and my father went to the nearest x-ray center - only to find that the x-ray room in on the first floor in a building that does not have a lift. Nobody has given a damn thought about how could a person who has pain in his legs walk up to the x-ray center. Even if one could be taken on a stretcher, that still would have to be taken up the stairs which is not the best case scenario for a person in pain. No wheelchair access in a hospital? The other one nearby did not have a digital x-ray machine - who goes analog these days?

We decided to take him to another center, one which was on the ground floor and had a digital x-ray machine. Now, if you have seen an x-ray machine, it has a decent height - about 3 feet I'd say. But the place did not have a mechanism to lift a person from the wheel chair and rest him on the x-ray bed nor trained people to do the job. Me and my father had to help lift him from the wheelchair and put him up on the x-ray bed. And then from some reason, the radiologist was not able to take x-rays in the normal position (he could not adjust the position of the x-ray beam to the appropriate hip position). He asked us to move my grandpa a little above the normal resting posture on the x-ray table in which one of us had to hold my grandpa's head much like Arjun's arrows that held Bhishma's head high above the ground. So much for a professional setup. And to top it all, he said that the report would be ready by late evening, knowing that the case has a bit of an emergency element to it.

I am confident on the quality of doctors in our nation, having experienced a few in the US, but we really need to improve our infrastructure, processes and personnel skills and not just in the healthcare industry but across all service sectors if we want to see ourselves as one of the frontrunners in the service industry for the next few decades.

adios.

Predicting crop yields

A few kilometers from Nasik is Pimpalgaon, India's largest onion market which also trades in other commodities such as tomatoes and table grapes. One can see huge farms of onions and tomatoes in the adjacent areas apart from increasing table and wine grape plantations. With onions and tomatoes being the mainstay, fluctuating prices in these crops have a huge impact on the local farmers.
Recently, I had been to Nasik(guess it was march). And I could see truckloads of tomatoes lying on the roadside that were dumped by the farmers. Surplus cultivation of tomatoes in the last Rabi season had brought down the prices to as low as Rs. 1 /- per kilo. And they found it cheaper to dump them on the road than to transport to the local market.

Such fluctuations in prices has increased the suicide rate amongst the farmers. A few farmers have moved towards non-conventional crops such as strawberries and wine grapes which do not see such huge fluctuations in prices. However, onions and tomatoes being the mainstay of the local markets, I think it is important and necessary for the farmer & trader community to be able to predict the crop yield and near-future demand which determine the prices. Past developments such as the ITC e-choupal & other initiatives now protect the farmers against swindling traders. But, I think these initiatives have to be taken to the next level in which the farmers would be able to predict approximate crop yields so that they can take apt decisions regarding which crops should be sown.

Crop yields are a function of (i) weather constraints, mainly the monsoon (ii) pests (iii) land area under cultivation of the crop (iv) crop rotation (v) intensive farming techniques. Lets assume that the current and upcoming weather forecast companies do a good job at forecasting the weather conditions and that pest control is easily achievable. That leaves us with decision regarding crop cultivation and farming techniques. A mechanism for the farmers to get knowledge about crops being sown at the start of the season might help them plan the crops they sow so that they can maximize revenues. Such a mechanism entails a huge real time information repository and reporting system.

Information about the crops sown in terms of acreage, along with an approximate idea on the crop yields per acre would help to arrive at an overall yield. Futures markets might help forecast demands at the time of harvest. A combination of these parameters can help the farmers make appropriate decisions at the time of sowing so that they can try & maximize revenues.

Such a forecast apparatus does seem impossible to build, and prices are also a function of international demand & supply which adds complexity to the design of such a mechanism. Achieving such a utopian dream seems out of bounds, but the benefits surely seem large enough to at least try a statistical approach to solve the problem. With budding entrepreneurs establishing private weather companies to help the farmers forecast weather, it might not be such a far-fetched idea.
<div McGrath took the decision of making this institute as the foremost management institute in India. In his words he described 'As soon as this decision was made, the greatest hurdle was crossed and that sources to make this happen followed'. " - These words were quoted by Father Director on the 53rd annual convocation.

The institute has since then lived up to its expectations and produced industry leaders of the future. Even in today's gloomy situation the institute has been able to place all its 2 year students with success.

But is everything alright with the way this institute runs all its courses. The question raises serious doubts if we consider the situation of the GMP batch. The institute has invested quite a bit in developing and expanding this course albeit with a skepticism that it may hamper their already established brands.

The administration just has to make the decision of bringing GMP to the forefront and the sources for success would follow without denting any of the established courses.

Has XL lived up to its promise in the media? - http://www.financialexpress.com/news/XLRI-to-make-GMP-second-flagship-course/196835/

West Ham Anthem

<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" line-height: 19px; More importantly the individual loses his freedom and liberty.

He argued that the condition in post war Britain and pre-war Germany was similar and that although Germany had lost the war in military terms it had won it on the ideological front as the allies were steadily increasing government controls.

Video summary of the book: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12oFhO3UZdU

The inefficiencies of central planning have certainly been proved over the years but not after a long stretched battle over the last century. Although the allies had adopted free economies, they were restricted by government control after the war. Hayek's arguments were ignored until about 1980s as Keynesian economics took centre stage. It was not until Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan came to power that the market economy became popular as they abolished government controls. It was only towards the end of the century that the free market economy of the early years of the century was restored.

An excellent documentary on the 20th century economic ideologies can be seen on pbs-http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/commandingheights/lo/story/index.html

As the current recession grips the world, countries have increased restrictions on trade. Keynesian mixed economy finds its application in such a scenario. However, the world should not fall prey to the thought that government control is good for them as it is certainly inefficient. It would not be easy to set the thought process of people back to free markets as they are experiencing the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression caused probably due to the free market structures.

Countries have started adopting protectionist & restrictive policies as they strive to get out of the mess hampering international trade. The protectionist policies might give rise to socialist tendencies over a long time. This might cause a shift back to the post war era and a major hindrance on the progressive path of humanity towards freedom.

“The finest opportunity ever given to the world was thrown away because of passion for equality made vain the hope for freedom” – Lord Acton

Why do I drink..

In these times of financial crisis where people and enterprises are struggling to make ends meet, with all the looming uncertainty about our future I believe that there should be some people who maintain sanity and go about doing what they do best. It's only when people resume behaving, working, spending & lending normally that certainty would start winning over uncertainty.

So, I thought in what way could I help the situation sitting in this small town of Jamshedpur. Well I'm not working anymore and hence not warning anymore to lend people. The only way I could help churn the economy is spending a bit in this town. If a few like me keep on spending as usual, the town would surely be able to sustain the slowdown. And so I thought about what I do best or what I enjoy the most. Drink

The macroeconomics work somewhat this way -

I spend on liquor at the bar. The bartender and the waiters do get some amount of tip in addition to their salaries from their secured jobs due to some of us drunkards. 'The Sonnet' is hence able to keep its debt obligations and makes profits in addition. The banks and the hotels creditors are paid back in time, which in turn are able to have more amount of liquid money at their disposal either to be lent or invested in other projects, say the celebrations on the 'City Founder's day'. Due to the money borrowed by JUSCO for the celebrations it is able to organize a grand ceremonious day, spending lakhs on the decorations and management.

Now, these celebrations employ a few event management companies, local government bodies for the occasion. These in turn give work to numerous small time electricians, sound, laser & pyro technicians, movers & packers, etc to make the event successful ensuring a grand turn out. The large mass people attract other dependent folks such as hawkers - panipuri wala, gubbare wala and other such as autowalas. All these people are able to earn a living because of this gala event. On the bazar day then these autowalas and hawkers go to the local bazar to buy clothes, food grains, and other home utility products.

After days of hard work one of them food grain merchants takes his family out for dinner and for simplicity's sake lets consider this to be the coffee house at 'The Sonnet'. This way the hotel is able to generate surplus profits and hence pay more taxes. Now, if a few of such hotels start paying larger taxes, the local government would have more funds for development & infratructure activities of the region while employing local private enterprises. This may help to some extent in alleviating the poverty of the region by engaging more people in the development activities dispersing more money in the local economy.

Now think about the larger picture. If people do keep spending normally or even more in these difficult times, that would mean more tax revenues for the state and national governments in addition to the frequent movement of money within the economy. The state and national governments would then be able to sustain larger infrastructure projects proliferating employment opportunities and projects for private firms. This could even turn into tax breaks for ailing industries. These industries would then be better able to compete in the global scenario and grow in size. This could mean a larger good for the entire nation. Atleast some of these companies could then visit our campus for recruitment and offer us or atleast our juniors a few commensurate jobs.

Hence, I think it is important to spend and more so in gloomy scenarios.

The questions that remains is not 'why am I drinking so much?' but rather 'am I drinking enough?'

Quoting Brearley & Myers: ' Money is what you can buy beer with'.

Note: Liquor has some of the highest excise duties in India with around 550% on liquor imported from the US.

hectic days

Just finished OMMD(Mathematics) exam today. To add to our grievance the new profs have given us assignments and presentations on day 1 itself. To add to the incapacitated feeling, Gango's style of coordinating the exam does not make it any easier. The commotion outside the hall caused due to following an airline style of filling in seats was a sight to watch.
And his 3 questions lived upto our expectations. I would daresay that the cumulative number of innovative solutions amongst 100 people for the 3 problems would surely be more than 200 as we found out after the exam. His regular announcements of time passed and micro-surveillance during the exam brings in nervousness. In addition to all that he is at his sadistic best during the exams asking people, "How is the paper? easy, right?".

One of his dialogues: A guy was looking to his left while thinking about the problem at hand. Gango walks up to him and asks him to write -2 on his paper. Upon arguing that he was just thinking by looking to the left. Gango retorts - "Well, don't think laterally. Write -2".

I will sum it up with Gango's dialogue today towards the end of the scheduled time. One of us is frantically calculating and writing. Out comes a gem, "Do not try to change your destiny in the dying minutes".

Days of the end term begin

We have reached towards the culmination of our first term here @ XLRI. The Macroeconomics paper has fortunately gone quite well.

But the classes haven't stopped yet. We had 4 of them today and 3 yesterday. And neither have our parties. Despite knowing that we had submissions due today, we went out for a quick booze yesterday night.
But all's well that ends well. We did submit our case writeup and are on track to study for the dreaded QT paper with complex statistics such as the ANOVA on 28th August.
ANOVA - http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/stat/12/anova-1w.htm

This one would be followed by another stats paper, albeit a relatively simpler one on 1st. And that would be followed by 5 papers in the next 3 days!! We boarded a chartered bus at around 2.30pm and thoroughly enjoyed the 25 km journey singing some old and new songs.
We were given a short lecture on the Narwapahar and Jaduguda mines alongwith a small documentary on the uranium mining industry in India.
Thereafter each one of the 32 of us was uncomfortably hatted with a helmet and a torch as we entered the mine shaft through which the 'cage' would take us down to 185 ML where the mining was in proceeds. Since the Uranium percentage is very low, about 0.04% the workers do not wear any kind of protection suit and likewise we too did not wear any. Surprisingly, it was not very unpleasant down under as the mines were well ventilated with help of blowers. High technology trucks and breakers were employed to dig and transport the ore from the mines to a dumping place from where the ore fell down by gravity to 295 ML onto a crusher. We then went further down at 295ML to see the crusher which crushed the huge boulders into small pieces and dumped them further down at around 315ML. From here ore is then transported to ground level using cage and pulley mechanism up a vertical shaft. On the ground the ore is then taken to another facility which separates the waste from the useful Magnesium DiUranate being sent to the NFC facility in Hyderabad.
We were really impressed by the enthusiasm of the engineers and workers who showed us the mine as if it were their own. They did portray their their responsibility towards of the productivity of the mine and we couldn't overlook the immense pride they felt in working for UCIL. We thanked them and applauded their efforts towards providing Nuclear fuel for India's Nuclear reactors.
Overall an awe-inspiring experience!
http://www.ucil.gov.in/

Awful Day

Although today started on a brighter note with the weather being pleasant and requisite comprehension of the topics discussed in the Accounting and Economics classes, it did not end so.
Gut feeling, though mostly correct, is not always so. I had a feeling that my chances of being called on stage to deliver a prepared speech are minimal and hence did not put in a good amount of effort. Unfortunately, I was called in on stage and I faltered. It was an awful experience and has taught me a lesson of being prepared for the most trifle sessions.
I only hope that I am given a chance again and I prove myself.

First Day

This is the first blog that I have ever written in my life. And after going through all the pain of completing all the settings my patience is running out. So, will try to keep it short.

Well, since it's my first blog, I will write about my first love. Soccer!
I just love watching and playing soccer. After a break of almost about 10 months I have started playing football here at the XLRI 'maidan'. Accompanying me are a few GMP'ites and a few local boys. Let's call this local boys as chotus as most of them have the name 'chotu'. It was a fun game and to add flavour I did score two goals today. Besides that, I just feel so fresh after running around for about an hour on the ground. This game is truly amazing. We just need a ball and a couple of athletes to have a gala time.
Well with the euro season culminating, I hope our season flourishes and I enjoy a few more days like today. I hope Spain wins tomorrow!
